How to Wax Thin Hair (When It Feels Like It’s Not Working)
One of the most common messages I get is:
“I feel like waxing doesn’t work on my thin hair.”
And I get why it feels that way.
You apply the wax, pull it off… and some hair comes out, but not all of it. It can feel really random. Like it’s skipping pieces.
Most of the time, it’s not the wax. It’s just that thin hair needs something slightly different from you and your application.
What’s actually happening
Waxing only works if the wax fully wraps around the hair before it hardens and pulls it out. With thicker hair, that happens pretty easily with the right wax formula.
With thin hair, there’s just… quite simply, less to grab.
The hair is finer, flatter, and easier for the wax to glide right over instead of actually gripping. So when people say “it didn’t pick anything up,” what usually happened is:
★ The wax sat on top of the hair instead of wrapping around it.
You can think of it like trying to grab a piece of paper of a really smooth flat desk.
The two things I would fix first
If you change nothing else, change these:
1. Use more pressure than you think
This is the biggest one.
When you’re applying wax on thin hair, you don’t want to just lay it on top. You want to actually press it in. Like you’re pushing the wax into the skin just slightly so it can mold around each strand. If you’re too gentle here, the wax just skims over everything.
2. Make your strips thinner
I know it feels like thicker = better especially with our Signature Formulas gel-like texture. But for thin hair, thicker strips usually make it harder for the wax to do its job. Thinner strips stay more flexible and hug the skin better. Which means they can actually wrap around those fine little hairs instead of sitting on them.
The mistake I see the most
People using the exact same technique they’d use for coarse hair.
★ thicker application
★ lighter pressure
★ waiting a little too long to pull
And then it turns into multiple passes… which is where irritation starts to come in.
Thin hair just doesn’t respond well to that approach.
How I’d actually do it
If I was walking you through this in real time, here’s exactly what I’d say:
★ Start with really clean skin. No oil, no lotion, no leftover product. Anything on the skin creates slip, and slip is what causes the wax to miss the hair.
★ Check your wax before you apply. You want that slow-moving, honey-like texture. If it’s too thick, you won’t be able to spread it thin enough. If it’s too runny, it won’t grip well.
★ Apply with firm pressure. This is where you’ll want to slow down a little. Lay the strip down and press. Not aggressively, but firmly and evenly. Make sure the edges are sealed and everything feels like it’s actually attached.
★ Keep it thinner than you think. This is where most people see the biggest difference. You don’t need a big, bulky strip. A thinner, more controlled strip is going to pick up way more and you’ll use less wax!
★ Don’t wait too long to pull
This tip depends on your wax:
With Signature, you have more time. You can let it set and still have flexibility. Keep in mind that if you've waxed with Signature before, it'll dry much faster as a thinner strip.
With Ultra-Jelly, you want to move quicker. Around 10–15 seconds.
If you wait too long (especially with faster wax), it gets stiff and doesn’t pull as cleanly. Pull low and controlled not up. Keep it close and parallel to the skin and move quickly.
Choosing between Signature and Ultra-Jelly
Both can remove thin hair. They just feel very different.
If you want more time and a gentler feel ->> Signature
★ More forgiving ★ More flexible ★ You’ll just need to be a little more intentional with pressure and strip thickness
If you want faster pickup ->> Ultra-Jelly ★ Grips quicker ★ Removes more in one pass ★ But you have to move faster and be more precise if it still feels like it’s not working
Before you switch waxes or give up on it, check this:
★ Are you pressing enough? ★ Are your strips thin enough? ★ Is your skin completely clean? ★ Are you pulling at the right time for your wax?
Usually it’s usually one small trick that can change things!
The simple way to think about it: Thin hair isn’t harder because waxing doesn’t work, it’s harder because it just needs a bit more pressure!
Once you dial in:
★ pressure ★ strip thickness ★ and timing
…it gets a lot more consistent and you'll be a pro at it in no time!
